GAIM (GIM) is the abbreviation of Gas-Assisted Injection Mould. It is a high-end customized injection mold matched with gas-assisted injection molding technology.

Widely applied to large and thick-wall plastic parts for automotive and home appliance industries, GAIM mould effectively solves common defects of traditional injection molding, such as sink marks, warpage, excessive weight and high material consumption.

Different from ordinary injection molds, the GAIM molding process injects high-pressure pure nitrogen into molten plastic to form a hollow gas channel inside thick-wall areas. The finished product features a solid outer skin and hollow internal structure, which maintains structural rigidity while reducing product weight and production cost.

1. GAIM Molding Process

Show the complete dynamic process of gas-assisted injection molding, including short shot feeding, nitrogen injection, gas pressure holding and product demolding, helping customers quickly understand the GAIM working principle.

2. Working Principle of GAIM Gas-Assisted Mould

The entire GAIM molding process is divided into four standardized steps, with stable molding logic and controllable product quality.

Short Shot Feeding

The mold cavity is only filled with 70%~90% plastic melt instead of full filling. The reserved space provides a flowing path for subsequent high-pressure nitrogen, which is the core premise of gas-assisted molding.

High-Pressure Nitrogen Injection

High-purity nitrogen is accurately injected into the core of molten plastic through the built-in gas needle / gas nozzle of the mold. The gas flows along the thick-wall rubber position with the minimum resistance and evenly pushes the plastic melt to the cavity wall.

Constant Gas Pressure Holding

High-pressure nitrogen maintains continuous pressure during plastic cooling, which compensates for the volume shrinkage of plastic materials, completely eliminates surface sink marks, and ensures flat and smooth product appearance.

Cooling, Venting and Product Ejection

After the outer plastic layer is completely cooled and solidified, the internal high-pressure gas is released. Finally, the qualified plastic product is ejected from the mold.

Product Characteristics: Solid outer surface + hollow internal gas channel, stable rigidity, light weight and no surface depression.

3. Special Structural Design of GAIM Mould

Compared with ordinary injection molds, GAIM mould has higher design precision and stricter structural matching requirements, with exclusive core components and supporting systems.

Core Component: Gas Needle / Gas Nozzle

As the key accessory of gas-assisted molds, it controls the precise inlet and outlet of nitrogen. The installation position and precision design directly affect the gas flow track and final molding effect, which is the most critical part of GAIM mold design.

Key Design: Gas Channel

Pre-plan professional gas flow paths for product thick-wall areas. It is necessary to conduct advanced mold flow analysis to predict the gas moving trajectory, effectively avoid defective problems such as gas blow through and gas channel offset.

Matching Auxiliary Equipment

GAIM mass production requires special supporting equipment, including nitrogen generator and pressure timing controller. These devices are not part of the mold body but are essential standard equipment for stable production.

Optimized Mold Auxiliary Structure

The gate, exhaust and ejection structures of the mold need to be professionally optimized to match the gas-assisted process timing, realizing high-precision linkage operation.

4. Core Advantages of GAIM Mould

Gas-assisted injection molding technology perfectly solves the various pain points of thick-wall plastic products, with prominent technical and cost advantages.

  • Eliminate Sink Marks: Effectively solve surface dents of thick-wall parts, greatly improving product appearance quality, and suitable for high-standard appearance plastic parts.

  • Save Materials & Reduce Weight: Reduce plastic raw material consumption by 30%~40%. The hollow structure ensures product rigidity while realizing lightweight design and lowering production costs.

  • Reduce Clamping Force: Support the use of small-tonnage injection molding machines, reduce mold and equipment wear, and save energy consumption.

  • Improve Dimensional Stability: Reduce internal stress of products, effectively inhibit warpage and deformation, and improve product qualification rate.

  • Improve Production Efficiency: Shorten product cooling cycle, speed up production rhythm and increase factory output.

  • High Design Freedom: Support integrated molding of thick and thin wall structures, breaking the design limitations of traditional injection molds.

5. Disadvantages and Application Limitations of GAIM Mould

Although GAIM is an advanced molding technology, it has certain application limitations, suitable for targeted product production.

  • High upfront design cost: Professional gas-assisted mold flow simulation is required in the early stage, and the debugging of gas needle position and process timing is difficult and time-consuming.

  • Additional equipment investment: It is necessary to purchase nitrogen generation and pressure control equipment separately, increasing the initial investment of the production line.

  • Narrow process window: Unreasonable parameter setting will easily cause defects such as gas blow through, channel deviation and internal bubbles.

  • Limited application scope: Not applicable for products that require fully solid internal structure.

6. FAQ About GAIM Gas-Assisted Mould

What kind of products need GAIM gas-assisted molds?

GAIM mould is the best choice for thick-wall, large-size plastic parts that are prone to sink marks and warpage. It is especially suitable for automotive parts, home appliance appearance parts and thick-wall daily plastic products. It is not recommended for ultra-thin parts and products requiring fully solid structure.

Is the production cost of GAIM mold higher than ordinary mold?

The one-time upfront mold development cost is slightly higher due to mold flow simulation and precision gas needle structure design. However, in mass production, GAIM can save 30%-40% raw materials, reduce machine tonnage and lower defective rate, which can greatly reduce the overall long-term production cost.

What are the common defects of GAIM molding and how to avoid them?

Common defects include gas blow through, gas channel offset and internal bubbles. These problems can be effectively avoided through precise mold flow analysis, reasonable gas needle position design and accurate process parameter debugging. Professional mold design and mature process technology are the core guarantees of qualified products.

7. Conclusion

GAIM (GIM) gas-assisted injection mould is a mature and high-end injection molding solution for thick-wall plastic parts. It makes up for the shortcomings of traditional injection molding technology in appearance, cost and product performance. With unique technical advantages, it has become the preferred process for high-quality automotive and home appliance thick-wall plastic parts.
